Transom mount vs rail mount vs leg mount

Most SeaKing bait boards are flat-mount — meaning they bolt onto a flat surface, whether that's the transom shelf at the rear of the boat, the gunnel rail along the side, or a custom mounting plate fitted to the centre console. This is the most flexible mounting type and the right choice for the majority of recreational fishing boats. The boards in this collection are all flat-mount.

For larger offshore vessels with a leaning post or T-top, our leg-mount SKL series offers a different approach — the board sits on integrated stainless legs that bolt to the deck or clamp to a structural pole. Leg-mount suits vessels where there's no flat gunnel surface large enough for a flat-mount board.

Choosing a mount for New Zealand conditions

Flat-mount is the right default for most New Zealand trailer boats. The alloy runabouts and fibreglass hulls that dominate ramps here nearly always have either a usable transom shelf or a gunnel rail with enough flat width to take a bolt-through board, and that is the strongest, least fussy way to mount one.

The one thing worth checking before you order is what is behind the mounting surface. Bolting through thin alloy without a backing plate will eventually work the fixings loose, particularly on a boat that gets trailered a lot and pounds home across a harbour bar. Backing plates are supplied with every board for exactly that reason — use them, and use marine sealant on the through-holes to keep water out of the core.

If your boat carries a leaning post or T-top and has no flat gunnel run long enough for a board, the leg-mount SKL series is the better answer.

Installing a flat-mount bait board on a New Zealand boat

Flat-mount installation is the most common and the most forgiving. The board bolts through your gunnel rail or transom shelf using 316 marine-grade stainless bolts with backing plates, sealed with marine polyurethane (Sikaflex 291 or equivalent). Every board in this collection ships with the core mounting hardware needed for a standard install.
